Thermo-Cycler   Industries   Inc.   was   started   by   Donn Kelver   and   has   been   specializing   in   energy   efficient industrial   heating   and   ventilation   since   1984.   After spending    over    twenty    years    managing    the    sheet metal    division    of    a    mechanical    contracting    firm, Donn   skeptically   installed   a   large   airturnover   system in   a   local   factory   in   the   early   1970’s   and   went   from skeptic   to   believer   after   seeing   it   in   actual   operation. A    few    years    later,    he    became    a    regional    sales representative   for   the   Johnson   Heater   Company   and successfully   sold   many   systems   for   warehouses   and large   industrial   manufacturing   buildings   in   Indiana, Michigan    and    Illinois.    In    the    early    1980’s,    with buildings     becoming     better     insulated     and     more attention    being    given    to    energy    efficient    heating, Donn   felt   there   was   a   growing   need   for   airturnover equipment   that   could   offer   similar   energy   savings and   comfort   in   smaller   buildings   that   ranged   from 10,000   sq.   ft.   to   100,000   sq.   ft.   In   September   of 1984,    the    Thermo-Cycler    GTC-400    was    born    to serve    that    need.    Having    spent    many    years    as    a heating   contractor   rather   than   a   manufacturer,   Donn also     understood     the     special     needs     of     those contractors.   He   built   a   contractor   friendly   company to   accommodate   those   needs   and   especially   those   of heating   contractors   who   work   closely   with   design- build general contractors.

What is Thermo Rotation®?

In addition to being the registered trademark of Thermo-Cycler Industries, Inc., Thermo Rotation® is an energy efficient air turnover method for heating large, open building areas which results in extremely comfortable, uniform temperatures and very low energy costs. Thermo Rotation Systems are designed for energy efficient recovery of all internal “waste” heat gains from lights, motors, and air compressors as well as any solar heat gains. By distributing waste heat at the level where employees are working instead of leaving it trapped at the ceiling, Thermo Rotation Systems do not use purchased fuel until all waste heat gains have been used.

How does it work?

It is well known that warm air rises. The Thermo Rotation System obtains fuel savings and employee comfort by the continual, gentle turnover of the cooler level of air at the floor level. By removing the cool air at the floor level, warm air which normally stratifies at the ceiling moves to the floor level where it is really needed. Thermo Rotation is much more effective and efficient than trying to blow air down from the ceiling. Although many buildings have more than a 20  F temperature difference inside the building, with Thermo Rotation, floor to ceiling, wall to wall temperature difference is often only 2 to 4 degrees! Our method of working with nature instead of trying to use high powered, high velocity fans and ductwork to battle against it results in low fuel consumption and comfortable, uniform temperatures throughout the area. This concept has been successfully applied for over 50 years and has been proven effective in thousands of buildings.

How is it different?

Compared to conventional overhead heating equipment, there are several operating characteristics that you do not have with a properly maintained Thermo Rotation System. You do not have high temperatures, high air velocities, high fuel bills or a high temperature at your ceiling. Usually, roof penetrations are significantly reduced and unsightly outdoor equipment is eliminated. Discomfort caused by blowing hot air or intense radiation is eliminated. Unlike direct fired makeup air space heaters, a Thermo Rotation System does not dump combustion byproducts or an excessive amount of moisture into a building. With the low operating costs of the ThermoCycler system, employees can be comfortable and productive without breaking the budget to pay the monthly heating bill. The gentle, constant air turnover movement of a Thermo Rotation System helps to reduce potential condensation problems on steel or other stored products and maintain uniform product temperature. Constant air movement also may improve the effectiveness of exhaust and ventilation systems and reduce the operating costs of excessive exhaust.

Thermo-Cycler takes a very sensible and simple approach to saving energy for heating warehouses and industrial manufacturing buildings. Compared to conventional infrared, unit heaters or direct fired makeup heating equipment, Thermo-Cyclers can often save 30-50%. This guarantee is only offered and applicable to original purchasers following a thorough indoctrination in system operation and performance through prior experience or visits to other Thermo-Cycler installations prior to the purchase. In the event of a failure of the system to provide satisfactory performance during the first heating season of operation, Thermo-Cycler Industries, Inc. will furnish additional air handling and/or heating equipment as necessary, at no additional cost to the original purchaser. Additional equipment will be supplied after a thorough evaluation of the complaint under operating conditions. Written notice of dissatisfaction must be directed to: Gregory Kelver, President Thermo-Cycler Industries Inc. 111 Hamilton Street Union Mills, IN 46382-0022 Phone (219) 767-2990   Additional equipment will be shipped F.O.B Destination Point with full freight allowed. All costs associated with unloading and installing any additional equipment will be by others. If additional equipment has been required, this guarantee will be extended through the next heating season. If the ThermoCycler System fails to perform in a satisfactory manner and all remedial efforts fail, the customer will remove the equipment and ship via common carrier (freight collect) to Thermo-Cycler Industries Inc. as directed. If the unit has only been subjected to normal use and handling, an amount equal to the original invoice will be promptly refunded. This guarantee is subject to the following exceptions: •  Building specifications and conditions must be as listed on the original proposal and may be subject to any performance exceptions specified in writing prior to order acceptance; • Uncontrolled excesses of outside air must not be introduced into the heated space due to lack of door discipline or other factors; • The space must not be subjected to excessive negative pressure due to improper operation of the exhaust or makeup air ventilation systems; • The equipment must be installed, operated, and maintained in accordance with our recommendations.

Warehouse Air Conditioning with an Air Turnover Heating System Over the years, many different contractors have asked us to put a DX air conditioning coil in our heating unit. They often tell us that “everybody” else is doing it Putting a cooling coil in an airturnover unit would be pretty easy to do. But we won’t do it for one reason - we just don’t think it is the right thing to do for most air turnover equipment applications. Quite frankly, we strongly  believe there are much better ways to air condition large warehouses or industrial buildings if comfort and energy efficiency are primary objectives for the cooling. Thermo-Cycler has specialized in Thermo Rotation® applications since the company was started in 1984. And from the start, we have offered a money-back Satisfaction Guarantee on our system that we take very, very seriously. However, if we started to put air conditioning coils in our heating equipment, we would no longer offer that Satisfaction Guarantee. While the initial costs of installing a coil in the equipment may be less expensive than other design approaches to air conditioning, we believe there is a pretty good chance that the enduser may be less than satisfied with the arrangement. But unfortunately, many customers may never even know how much better it could have been if their contractor would have spent just a few more dollars on the initial installation. While it may be old-fashioned and not in sync with common business practice today, we will not sacrifice our hard earned reputation for a short term sale that may have long term consequences for the enduse customer of our system. It is possible to eliminate the ductwork and to design an air conditioning system that uses Thermo-Cyclers as the primary air distribution equipment. Done right, it is effective, comfortable and economical to operate. One 50,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility for a major control manufacturer had less than 2.6 degrees temperature difference between any two areas in the facility even when outside conditions were above design conditions.. The Thermo-Cyclers used for heating and air distribution in that facility required very minimal motor horsepower. On HVAC equipment that runs 24/7, 365 days per year that operating cost can add up very quickly. Thermo-Cycler now offers chilled water and DX cooling equipment specifically designed to complement the energy efficient Thermo-Cycler heating system. Our equipment can be installed along with the Thermo-Cycler heating equipment or it can be installed at a later time. While our approach is more expensive than simply putting a big DX cooling coil in a big air turnover unit, we believe that it offers many, many advantages over the way our competitors try to cool a building. Over the life of the project, we believe the cost difference will be paid back many times over. If you want to air condition your next project, we can offer alternative choices and what you can expect from the choice you make.  We also can offer ventilation approaches that may make more sense than air conditioning the entire area. Often the difference between a properly designed an air turnover based heating and cooling system and a lowest initial cost equipment is only a few cents per square foot on the overall building costs. And the payback time in both operating costs and comfort can be remarkably short. Before you make your final decision about air conditioning for the project, please carefully compare all differences including the projected annual electric operating costs for each system. Ask how much temperature difference you can expect within the conditioned area with the equipment that is being proposed. Finally, if you decide to buy a turnover type heating unit that has a cooling coil in it, please insist that it also come with a written, money-back Satisfaction Guarantee directly from the manufacturer.
